Color Wash

Color Wash: A sunset becomes abstracted by water.

Lately I find myself using the iphone as a visual sketchbook.  I pick up colors, patterns and ideas- little snippets to incorporate into something later perhaps.  This is the last of the abstract photo-doodles for now.  I’ll get back to posting art photography in a day or two.

Mirage 18b: Abstract Art Nude

abstract art nude

Mirage 18 b

Eighteenth in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.  This is the mildly NSFW version.  I feel like I should have a band, so this could be our album cover.!

Mirage 18

Mirage 18a: Abstract Art Nude Portraiture.

abstract art nude

Mirage 18 a

Eighteenth in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.  My friend Sera has been having a big hair week, on account of the heat and humidity.  So it seemed natural to grab her for a couple of quick portrait shots using the mirrors.  I love how her hair became a lion’s mane!  Depending on where she stood in relation to the mirror or which side of the mirror was up we got totally different looks- all in about thirty minutes.  This one is the FB safe version.  I’ll post the non-FB approved version next.

Experimentation pt 2: Surfaces in the Mirage Art Nudes

abstract art nude

Mirage 17

Experimentation with surface treatments in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.

This is the second image where I was experimenting with surface treatments to the metal plate.  My goal was to bring some additional texture and sense of movement to the image.  I wrote more about the process applied to the plate in part 1.  I think the end result turned out quite well- the surface strokes mirror the movement of Doe’s body and give it an additional sense of texture.  There is a certain sense of flow generated by her pose, the surface strokes and the distortion of the lights in the upper left hand corner of the frame.  While I am happy with this image, I may knock the intensity of the smudges back in the next go around so they become a more subtle texture.  We’ll have to see how it turns out!

As before, there is no Photoshop manipulation beyond cloning out the plate clamps and adjusting the exposure.

Experimentation: Plate Surfaces in the Mirage Series

Experimentation with surfaces in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.

The Mirage series has been about re-imagining the art nude.  I love working with the human form- it can be so graceful, pliable and surprising.  But nudes can just as easily be cliché.  I didn’t want to create a literal image of the body; it’s just been so “done” in the internet era.  Which is why I find the metal reflections so appealing.  The images are traces, abstract suggestions of the human form, rather than literal translations.  The treatment of the metal has been a major component of the Mirage series.  The polishing, scratching  and distressing of the sheet are an integral part of the process and the final image.  It got me thinking about how I might bring more texture to the metal surface. Mirage 15

Abstract art nude photography

Mirage 15

Fifteenth in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.

This image, unlike others in the Mirage series, was produced outside.  It is a photograph of reflection in a sheet of polished copper.    The result is an eerie, abstract image, more like an impressionist painting than a photograph.  Sera and Mara were such great sports, given the heat, humidity and bugs!

Mirage 13

Thirteenth in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.

These are even more abstract!  Reflected in steel, I let the metal bend and curve, elongating Mara into pure shapes and form.

Mirage 11

Eleventh in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.

Reflected in polished aluminum, this one is cooler, harder, tough and strong.  She disappears into the darkness.  Only a part can be known.

Mirage 10

Tenth in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.

As with all of the images in this series, this is a reflection in a sheet of polished metal.  In this case, the metal is steel, like Mirage 9.  The sheet is warped here, hence the distortion of Mara’s image.

Mirage 9

Mirage Anisotropic Images abstract art nude

Mirage 9

Ninth in the Mirage series of abstract art nudes.

As with all of the images in this series, this is a reflection in a sheet of polished metal.  In this case, the metal is steel.  The images in steel are softer, and have a special quality, but you have to work for it.  I’ll write more about the materials and process later, but suffice it to say, steel is serious work!
