Improving your photography

It’s that time of year when photography websites and magazines start publishing “gift lists” of stuff that will supposedly improve your photography.  This is kinda like that, but not.  If you REALLY want to improve, read the rest below.

Existence Behind a Mask

I love how the metal distortion, the light and shadows combine to create this image.  It looks as if Z has removed her mask only to reveal, nothing?  That’s the danger of masks.  They hide and protect us.  They feel like armor.  But worn too long and the self atrophies, like a limb held in a cast.  The thing that was supposed to support becomes a tool of waste.  Sometimes it’s good to pull the mask off, to let in light and fresh air.  Even if it risks being exposed.

Edges

Fine art nude reflection by Lucas James

I just got back from a weeklong photographic workshop with Connie Imboden up a the Maine Media Workshops.  It was an amazing experience and I’ll write more about it later, but one thing in particular stuck with me.  Connie repeatedly emphasized paying attention to the edges of the frame.  The constrictions of the photographic form force us into a defined compositional shape, but the form can be a source of creative seeing as well. Creating New Work

Monotone fine art nude photograph by Lucas James

My creative process is an exploratory (and often random) one.  It’s through the creation of the mirrors from sheets of metal and the subsequent photography that an image- an idea- reveals itself.  I find rather than plan.
