Abstract photography in China
A friend of mine just pointed out that earlier this week I had promised to post some more abstract photos from the China trip “tomorrow”. I guess time got away from me- mea culpa! More after the jump. (more…)

I recently had to travel to China for work. Our trips are very focused with a lot of business packed into very little time, but I always manage to make some images. More after the jump. (more…)
I’ve been a bit derelict in posting lately and for that I apologize. What can I say- between the real job, prepping for shows and editing photos, I fell a bit behind in putting images up on the site. But better late than never! (more…)

Photographers love gear, and with so many excellent toys out there, it can be easy to get lost in GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). But in art, it’s not about the gear but the final product. Sometimes the most humble of tools gets us to the image. (more…)
A buddy of mine recently acquired a used Fuji x100 and lent it to me for a weekend. The leaf shutter and its ability to sync to 1/4000th of a second is a very compelling feature and I used it in a class to create a moody vibe for our images (see an example here). But I wanted to see how the Fuji x100 would perform in street photography, so I dragged it around Boston for a day. Some of the results are after the jump. (more…)
A poorly planned art nude shoot is not going to go well. Go in without a clear concept or even a concept beyond “nude woman in front of X” and you risk creating a boring image. The whole goal of the Art Nudes in Nature workshop was to avoid boring images. Hit the jump to see if we met that goal!
I’m teaching a class this weekend entitled “Nudes in Nature”. I’m out of my comfort zone with this workshop, as I really don’t shoot nudes outside. It’s just not my thing, mostly because the subject risks becoming clichè or trite. How many images are there of: nude on a rock, nude in front of a bush, nude on the sand, etc? I’m guessing billions. But I’m a firm believer that struggle leads to growth, so I’m all in for the course.
So how am I going to get around this? Whenever I get stuck, I go at a problem from a different angle. Forget the nudity for now and let’s focus on some concepts. We’ll fill in subject and technique later. Bear with me through a decidedly non-linear creative process after the jump.
