The general theory of relativity visualizes space and time as a four dimensional surface. All of our existence- our past, present and future- plays out simultaneously on this surface. My art is an attempt to visualize that existence in spacetime. Images after the jump.
Existence on a Spacetime Surface
I’ve been contemplating ways of visualizing memory and past experiences. As three dimensional beings we experience time in a linear fashion. Past events are fleeting memories and snippets of experience. Photographs are slices of time captured on film or digital sensor. But time and space can be conceived of as a four dimensional existence- a surface called spacetime. All matter presses on the surface of space time, pulling other objects toward them. We exert our own gravitational pull on those near us. But Einstein’s theory does not account for the emotional forces that pull us toward others, nor does it explain how those forces grow stronger as distance increases.
